How to claim your prize

Where you take a winning ticket depends on the state that ran the draw and on how much the ticket won. Sign the back of the ticket, keep it flat and dry, and claim early rather than near the deadline.

Tax on a prize

Tax is deducted at source at 31.2% on any lottery prize above ₹10,000. That is 30% under the income tax law on winnings from lotteries, plus the 4% health and education cess on the tax.

The deduction applies to the whole prize, not only to the part above the threshold. A prize of ₹10,001 is taxed on all of it. A prize of exactly ₹10,000 is below the line and is paid in full. There is no exemption to subtract first and no lower rate for a small win above the threshold.

So a first prize of ₹1,00,00,000 reaches you as about ₹68,80,000 before any agent commission or office deduction. The tax is taken before the money is paid, and the winnings are not merged with your other income at your own slab rate.

The agent who sold a winning ticket has 2% deducted from the seller commission printed beside the prize. That deduction is the agent’s, not yours, and it does not come out of the prize.

This is not tax advice. Rates change. Ask a chartered accountant about a large prize, and keep the deduction certificate the paying office gives you.

Before you go

  • Check the official result PDF or the Government Gazette notification for that draw yourself. A result on this site, or on any other site, is not proof of a win.
  • Sign the back of the ticket as soon as you know it has won.
  • Keep the ticket flat, dry and out of the sun. A torn, washed or unreadable ticket can be refused, and nothing replaces it.
  • Take a photograph of both sides before you hand it over.
  • You must be 18 or over to claim.

Nobody will call you about a win

No Directorate telephones, texts or messages a winner. Nobody legitimate asks for a fee, a tax payment, a processing charge or an OTP before releasing a prize. If somebody does, it is fraud.
